Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is one of the most unique natural phenomena on the planet: seven-colored mineral stripes, formed over millions of years and revealed only a few decades ago by the retreat of the glaciers. Reaching its viewpoint, at 5,036 m (16,522 ft) above sea level, also means crossing an Andean landscape still inhabited by alpaca- and llama-herding communities, with the sacred Ausangate peak as a backdrop — a postcard that sums up why the Andes keep surprising even those who already know Machu Picchu.
